Soweto

township tour

Soweto represents the hard-fought struggle against apartheid. We look beyond the bloody legend of the 16 June 1976 uprising and behind the hardened face of resistance politics, to the core of Soweto and its people. You’ll catch a glimpse of the lives of its estimated 3 million residents. The discovery of Gold in 1885 brought thousands of people from around the world to Soweto to seek their fortunes and for labor purposes. In 1976 June 16, high school students in Soweto protested for better education and most of them lost their lives in the struggle against Apartheid and better education. Now the 16th of June is called Youth day, which honor the young people who lost their lives in the struggle.

"Our guide was Gert and it ended up being myself and my fiance only on the your, despite not having booked a private safari. Gert was brilliant. His knowledge of the park, animals and birds was encyclopaedic and entertaining. He had a great dry sense of humour, laid back and tried to facilitate our requests. The accommodation and food etc were nice, but the safari was just great. Highly recommended."

Three of us did the budget/economy tour and were surprised at how amazing it was for being a "budget tour". The drive to/from Johannesburg with Dez was smooth. The lodge was perfect; a really nice place and the meals were delicious. The best part of the tour was our guide, Robbie Williams. Robbie is extremely experienced and with him we saw the big 5 plus more. I would recommend nhongo to anyone!

Robbie was the most fantastic guide! He really took his time to explain everything to us and went out of his way to give us the best experience/time. Waking up for a game drive with him even after a short night was the biggest pleasure and we couldn't have asked for anything better!! Thank you so very much!!
